Subject: INVESTIGATE INDIA for violation of Nelson Mandela Rules in the case of Prisoners of Conscience Amritpal Singh and his Nine Associates.
Dear UN Officials:
My name is . I am a member of the global Sikh community. I am writing to urge you to investigate India for the inhumane detention of Sikh preacher and socio-religious leader Amritpal Singh and his nine associates in violation of Nelson Mandela Rules which obligates to treat all prisoners with respect for their inherent dignity and value as human beings, and to prohibit torture and other forms of ill-treatment.
As of February 16. 2024, Prisoners of Conscience, Amritpal Singh and his associates, are on a hunger strike for denial of their rights.
Amritpal Singh, the head of social religious organization "Waris Punjab De" and his nine (9) associates, Papalpreet Singh; Daljeet Kalsi; Bhagwant Singh; Harjit Singh; Gurinder Pal Singh; Varindar Singh 'Fauji'; Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala; Basant Singh; and Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal are being illegally detained and kept in inhumane conditions at Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, India on the orders of:
- Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India;
- Amit Shah, Union Home Minister of India;
- Ajit Doval, NSA Advisor;
- Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab; and
- Gaurav Yadav, Director General of Police, Punjab.
Amritpal Singh and his nine (9) associates have been detained under National Security Act of India (NSA) without trial, bail, access to judicial recourse, and held in inhumane conditions with denial of basic amenities guaranteed under United Nations' Nelson Mandela Rules.
Amritpal Singh and his associates are being persecuted on account of their subscription to and participation in WPD's socio-religious campaign - “Khalsa Vaheer” which is aimed at fighting the drug menace among the youth in Punjab and for preaching the Sikh way of living as guided by the holy scripture of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
NSA law is used by the India's Modi governments as an extra-judicial tool to silence and suppress the dissenting socio religious voices.
We ask the UN to investigate India for violation of Nelson Mandela Rules in the case of Prisoners of Conscience Amritpal Singh and his Nine Associates.
